The state of our nation...

“Vice is a monster of so frightful mien,
As to be hated needs but to be seen;
Yet seen too oft, familiar with her face,
we first endure, then pity, then embrace”
-Alexander Pope
Its amazing to me what the world is coming to.  The events of this weekend have kind of been a wake-up call to me.  Maybe I'm just naive but I thought there was no way that something so blatantly wrong, so flagrantly against the basic principles upon which this nation was founded, could ever pass!  Boy was I wrong.  It is easy to be complacent about the situation in D.C.  After all, most moms at home literally pay more attention to the price of yogurt in Wal-mart than the the goings-on at the capitol.  I hope that this is a wake-up call to more people than just me.  I wrote a paragraph on it., but afterwards I found this from Elder L. Tom Perry, I think that it explains my feelings and more perfectly:

"I look around me and find some very definite signs of the decay that is beginning to occur. Corruption, crime, dishonesty, immorality, pollution, laziness, devotion only to special interests—these are signs that precede the fall of great civilizations. We see so much evidence of these signs before our eyes. Yet I realize the promise that has been given to us in this great land of America. I also remember the prophecies concerning our great responsibilities to preserve that which we have been blessed with by God. The Lord has promised to sustain the truth in this land....Now, I declare to you that if we are not in the beginning stages of the fulfillment of this prophecy, we are at least in the stages where we are preparing for its fulfillment"

That was from back in 1976!  Think about what has happened in the last 34 years!  Talk about moral and political decay.  I truly believe that we are now at a pivotal point in history were the fabric of our nation is beginning to tear and it will not be long before the constitution is in fact "hanging  by a thread." We need to remember our responsibility.  This is a blessed land and just as with the founding fathers, we have the Lord behind us to fight this second fight for freedom and what's right!

Wow! I loved this post... seriously, may I steal the quote for my own blog? I just went out with some friends and we discussed the same thing and how it seems to be so far from the foundations of the constitution.
I didn't vote for those in office and wouldn't vote for them again, but I am a believer in supporting our leaders regardless if I agree with them or not (i.e there have even been bishops I feel this way about). I kinda hate to rethink my sentiments regarding having support for leaders like ours currently are, I've had a very tough time with this but know that our nation is a chosen place, chosen to be so great to have the restoration take place here and chosen also to bring about the downfall of man... I just try to remind myself that the best thing I can do is do what I can do at home. No matter what vices we face, if we have the sure foundation, we will be okay... even if our country is not.
Sorry for the long comment. Miss you.
