I'm throwing a really small dinner party (inviting 3 couples) on Christmas Eve, but I'm having a tough time with the menu.
I have a frozen turkey in my oven and I was planning on using it, but I'm afraid that its going to end up too much like a thanksgiving dinner. But, is that a bad thing? For Christmas you expect a beautiful crown roast, ham, or salmon. So is turkey a disappointment? I can make potatoes au gratin instead of mashed potatoes, and do some different side dishes, but would you miss the mashed potatoes?
Also, Billy likes yams, and i...... don't. So do I need yams? I would rather do creamed spinach or something.
Do I need to serve appetizers or can we just jump into the dinner? I was told a minimum of 2 courses and a maximum of 4. We'd only have two: dinner and dessert. Do I need to add appetizers?
Here is what I first came up with:
Turkey and dressing
Mashed potatoes
green salad
green beans (maybe in casserole form)
glazed carrots
rolls with butter
Cranberry relish
We've considered changing these or adding things like yams, creamed spinach, chutney, jello salad, etc. So what do you think?
For dessert:
Cherry pie
Pumpkin roll
Better-than-sex trifle

CUTE! Oh how I miss you guys!
I've never seen the difference between thanksgiving and christmas dinner, except maybe thanksgiving has more food.... and at christmas you get hot cider. So I think that looks great. Sounds delicious!
Shayla, you are so silly! Don't worry about a turkey. Some people do a ham or a roast for thanksgiving and not a turkey. It will be perfect. :) Everything sounds delicious. If I was coming, I would say to definately do the green beans in casserole form- it is my favorite! That and you don't have to do yams. Make Billy make them. You seriously don't like yams?? Even like southern yams with pecans and brown sugar and marshmellows?!? Oh they are delicious to the taste!
Turkey any time of the year is fantastic...if you end up making yams, look for a recipe that calls for eggnog, it makes all the difference!
If I were you, I'd do fresh green beans, steamed with butter...
If you want an appetizer, go with the ever so tradition chips and dip-it's easy, yet delicious and satisfies the need for a salty crunch while waiting on the main course! :-)
I hope it al turns out fantastic!
What a fun cute idea! You are super mom/wife! My family always either had a turkey dinner or ham dinner for Christmas so I think turkey is great! As far as appetizers go, my mom always just put out a basic veggie tray and chips and dip to satisfy our munchies before dinner! I hope everything goes great! We should get together soon!!
